Assignment - September - Phase 5 : Finishing Touches

It is with some great joy that I type in the last entry for September. Not only does this mean that 2/3 of the assignment are completed, but also the fact that 'Speed of Sound' is being blasted out of my speakers. I admit, it is a relief to have a great chunk of the work completed early. I'm hoping to complete the final image by the 24th Nov (2 weeks on Monday), thus allowing me 3 weeks of enjoying the Christmas atmosphere.
Anyways... I had put it off long enough... But now, there was nothing else left to do, but to add the textures to Mr Crow. (I need to think up a name for it still...)
Starting off with the simple bits, the eyes and beak were coated with a basic dark grey, with a strong specular level added to it. Seen as the beak is quite long, 'Anisotropic' worked best for this one, to create a long, horizontal highlight. The eye didn't work quite as well, but it worked nicely on the beak.

The eye was also 'Anisotropic', but darker and with a more concentrated specular level (Just up the glossiness of it).

The legs were made with the awfully named 'Oren-Nayar-Blinn'. A light grey with mild specular level helped to differentiate it from the rest of the bird.

Before moving onto the feathers, there was another chance for a quick bit of procrastination. Give the wheat a splash of colour.

Time for the tricky one... the feathers underwent several failed attempts before coming up with this one (Which was the most successful of them). One of the crow images that was used for making the body, was brought up as a template for the feather pattern. It's effectively dark blue/black with lighter highlights. So to start off, a canvas was painted with a mix of dark blue and black. It was then scribbled over with light greys and mid-blues.

After this, it was hit with some Gaussian blur. Yes yes, I know it looks like sick at the moment...

After flipping it so the lines were horizontal, I brought back an old friend from the May assignment: Mosaic Tiling. This was implemented with a moderate blue colour, with the light intensity turned right down.

To finish, this was given another blast of Gaussian Blur. Not brilliant, but it vaguely has the desired effect. Let's see how it looks...

Not bad. A little bit like a woolly jumper, but getting there. (Most previous attempts did actually make the crow look like it was wearing a tank-top)

Now that's more like it! The material shader was changed from 'Blinn' to 'Oren-Nayar-Blinn' (I had forgotten to do that before applying) and the texture tiled. A bit of tweaking a playing around later, and we have the crow texture completed. Not the best texture, but pretty good. Again, I can always come back and try some new textures. I have a deadline to meet, and would rather take care of June before I start spending ages on small details.

And there it is! September. Job Done. 2 down, 1 left. Time for a cuppa methinks...
